Sod Calculator
Calculate how much sod you need in pallets and rolls from lawn dimensions. Includes waste, pallet coverage and cost.
Sod needed
4 pallets
- Lawn area with waste
- 1,575 sq ft
- Pallets
- 4
- 10 sq ft rolls
- 158
- Estimated sod cost
- $720.00
Assumes 450 sq ft per pallet and a 5% waste allowance for cuts and edges. Install within 24–48 hours of delivery.
Sod is sold by the pallet or by the roll, and the coverage varies by supplier. This calculator converts lawn dimensions into square footage, adds a waste allowance for edges and cuts, and estimates pallets and 10 sq ft rolls.
Fresh sod needs to be installed within a day or two of delivery. Measure the lawn before you order, prepare the soil, and have water ready — the installation is the easy part, and the first week of watering decides whether it survives.
How the sod calculator works
Lawn area = length × width. Multiply by (1 + waste) to get the area you should buy. Pallets = area with waste ÷ pallet coverage, rounded up. Rolls are estimated at 10 sq ft each.
Worked example
A 50 × 30 ft lawn is 1,500 sq ft. With 5% waste that is 1,575 sq ft, or 4 pallets at 450 sq ft each. The same area is about 158 rolls of 10 sq ft sod.
Site prep before sod
- Kill existing weeds and grass, then remove the debris. Do not till weeds into the soil.
- Till the top 4–6 inches and amend with compost if the soil is compacted or low in organic matter.
- Grade for drainage away from the house, and install irrigation before the sod arrives.
- Water the prepared soil a day before installation so it is moist but not muddy.
Sod vs seed
| Factor | Sod | Seed |
|---|---|---|
| Establishment | Instant lawn | 4–8 weeks |
| Cost | Higher upfront | Lower material cost |
| Erosion control | Immediate | Needs straw or blanket |
| Best timing | Spring or fall | Spring or early fall |
| Water demand | Daily at first | Frequent light watering |
Aftercare for new sod
Water deeply enough to soak the soil under the sod, not just the surface. In hot weather that can mean watering twice a day for the first week. Lift a corner after a few days to check that the roots are knitting into the soil.
Stay off the lawn until it is rooted, usually one to two weeks. Mow when the grass is about one-third taller than the recommended height, and keep the first cut light.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
Most pallets cover 400–500 sq ft, with 450 sq ft a common figure. Pallet sizes vary by farm and grass type, so confirm the coverage before ordering.
How long can sod sit before it is installed?
Install it within 24–48 hours, and sooner in hot weather. Sod stacked in the sun will heat up and die quickly. Keep it in shade and water the pallet if you must delay.
What is the best time of year to lay sod?
Spring and early fall are ideal in most climates, when temperatures are moderate and rain is more likely. Avoid installing in extreme heat or when the ground is frozen.
How much water does new sod need?
Plan on about 1 inch of water per day for the first week, split into two applications in hot weather. Reduce gradually after the roots knit into the soil, usually after 10–14 days.
Do I need topsoil under sod?
Yes, sod needs 4–6 inches of decent soil to root into. If the existing soil is compacted or mostly clay, till in compost or bring in topsoil before installing.
Can I lay sod over existing grass?
No. Remove or kill the existing grass first. Sod laid over old turf will not root evenly and the old grass will compete for water and nutrients.
Assumptions and accuracy
- Dimensions are converted to feet before the calculation; 1 ft = 12 in = 0.3048 m.
- Waste allowances are estimates. Add more for irregular shapes, many cuts and uneven subgrade.
- Bag yields, coverage rates and material densities vary by product. Check the label or ask your supplier.
- Local building codes and site conditions always take precedence over a general-purpose calculator.
